Subject: Canadian Census - Co-ordinated response to linux incompatibility
Hello,
My name is Ben Holt, I am the chair of the Vancouver Linux User Group
(VanLUG). I am writing to you in your capacity as your LUG contact on
the linux.ca web site.
As you may be aware the Canadian government is currently conducting the
census and that they have included the ability to answer the census
questionnaire on line. Unfortunately the web-based questionnaire does
not support linux even when a linux-based client meets the stated
software requirements of the census web site.
The VanLUG membership has had a strong reaction to the lack of linux
support. While the on line component of the census is still in the news
spotlight we would like to take this opportunity to lobby the government
to ensure that future government initiatives are fully compliant with
W3C standards and that they be designed to work with all modern computer
systems and not just those based on proprietary operating systems.
In an effort to strengthen our lobbying efforts we would like to
co-ordinate our actions with other LUGs across the country. If you or
your LUG are interested in joining us could you please drop me an email
to let me know. At this point we expect our efforts to involve a letter
writing campaign and press releases to local media.
Yours truly,
Ben Holt
